* Complying with legalities. - Check your local building codes and make sure that you have a building permit (and a homeowner's permit if you are part of the homeowner's association and are required in your community to come up with one for your project.) Of course, you need a set of plans to secure the permit and straight out I'm telling you, you're gonna save a lot of time and trouble purchasing a good set of plans versus coming up with one yourself.
* Complete material list. - Sometimes it's hard to start a project with a lot of passion, only to find out midway that either you don't have enough materials, you are lacking a critical one, or you ended up with buying or making the wrong set. Having a professional set of plans changes all that.
For example, there are plans that have a complete material list, as well as a cut chart showing you what size to cut your wood. This is just neat as all you need to do is buy the material from a lumber store, show them the sizes you need, have them cut exactly the way it's stated, and you just fit them together like a jigsaw puzzle!
* Location of the shed. - And it's purpose. Also, do you need an electric source for it? Stuff like these are usually all laid out in a good blueprint and you can take note of all the adjustments that you need to make beforehand (instead of scratching your head in the end and wondering, "Why didn't I think of that in the first place?").
