If you are like me, I started out with, well... not really zero experience. It's more like a basic type of experience when it comes to woodworking. Had a good understanding and used a hammer, saw, chisel, and some power tools every now and then. But it's more like... I use them in quick fixes and never in a grand project such as a saltbox shed, garden shed, or a carport.

A space presented itself. It gave me the chance to unite two parts of a garden which were separated by a high wall. Its a multi use space. Its used as my studio. I’m a painter. I sometimes sleep up there, We’ve eaten and pondered things there too. I have an other shed to store bikes, the lawnmower and tools.

How would you describe your shed?

A work in progress. It started out out as something simple to fulfill a need. But it evolved as materials presented themselves. I wouldnt want to say its a this or a that, because it is a versatile space.

Who are your shed inspirations?

“Tapawingo NY on Lake Placid.is perhaps my goal, but my inspirations are many and varied, though mostly more modest. Fisherman’s huts on Orkney made from salvaged materials. Tin sheds in Caithness and Sutherland. Mountain huts in the Cascades. Campers built on old trucks,converted buses and railway carriages.

Really anything where someone has used materials inventively that were found, cheap or better still free and to hand. ”

Future Shed plans

Oh? I was given some huge Georgian windows, perhaps 8 feet high. I also have the aluminium frame from a factory cupula which I can reglaze. I’ve got a dozen telegraph poles, 60 scaffolding boards and a load of 4x2s and a space. I’ll need to find some slates or some more metal sheeting for a roof. If I can find it before the winter, I’ll make a start in the Spring.

Wonderful allotment video – sheds a plenty

Some great Friday viewing for you.

One of our Just Sheds Flickr group members Bill Newsinger has done a video of his local allotments – some great sheds here.

Just around the back of my house are the Queens Road Allotments. They are divided into plots which people use to grow vegetables and keep chickens etc. It’s also a place to go to get away from it all. It really is as if time has stood still on the allotments. In the evening, at this time of year, it is a magical place!

All the film was shot on a Canon 500D and the music is my own creation, recorded in Pro Tools.

Weird Shed of the week –alloy boat shed

A great example of a shed where you would not expect one – on a boat – well after my shedboat sighting on holidays Iam not surprised anymore

anyway this is from Oz owned by Stewert and I hope we get some more pictures soon and an explanation.

This shed is specially built to fit onto a boat, if it don’t work out it will make a good garden shed but an expensive one.

not sure if it’s really a shed but as you know on readersheds we are totally open to interpretations on the matter

Chiswick Camouflage Shed

When you are known on the interwebs as someone who likes the odd shed or two it’s great to get a referral from a acquaintance of an acquaintance, saying they know has this great shed, and when you get to the source it’s wonderful to see the creative side of sheddies.

Zoe Hewett is one of those creative lot.

The ‘Chiswick Camouflage’ Shed was actually a private commission for clients who had already been very pleased with items of furniture that I had reconditioned for them.

With my former career in scenic art & design (i’m now an interior designer/ decorator), they were very trusting and gave me quite a free reign to transform their brand new shed, because although it’s smart, it wasn’t inspirational.

They only asked me to do something to break it up in the line of vision, so it wasn’t a big box of wood anymore.

I found inspiration looking at a small mass-produced canvas that had been collaged with almost identical leaves, uniformly positioned in rows, and that was the starting point for the idea for camouflage. I researched leaf
shapes to use instead of recreating a military pattern, as that would have had a very different connotation, and painted it using Cuprinol woodstain.

I was pleasantly surprised by the range of colours they have available now, which is great as would have been 3 times the price to do in weathershield paint.

Now it disappears into the garden from a distance, and the owners were thrilled with it.

8 x 8 ft Off the shelf from Anglian Sheds at Marks Tey – very reasonable. Had to be brought in over the neighbour’s wall in sections and then put together. Fully insulated and lined out with ply, carpeted with full power and telecoms links (as you’d expect from a Post Office!).

The Postal collection started life in an old outside loo, bur soon out grew that, necissitating the purchase of a shed. With the collection still a growing, a second shed is now in prospect!

Future Shed plans

Either add another shed of a similar size (56sq ft) or buy the land at the bottom of the garden and put in a 40ft x 10ft monster shed!

Ultimate Big Brother – Craig Phillips shed building task

I know a lot of you love the Big brother thing but I don’t at all, but this caught my eye on the interwebs news search.

The very first winner of Big Brother, Craig Phillips, has returned to the house as part of a shed building challenge against the Ultimate Big Brother housemates.

Earlier this evening, housemates were told of today’s task, which involved building a shed together in the garden.

The task rules stated that all housemates must take part and “fully contribute”. They were then given special outfits, which included blue overalls and gloves.

You can watch the video over at Channel 4 – tell me if anything interesting happens.
